How To Reduce Swelling Following a Tummy Tuck

It can be a bit disheartening coming home after your tummy tuck to get the flat sexy midsection you’ve been dreaming of only to look in the mirror and see a bloated and swollen abdomen. Swelling is inevitable, that’s why it’s important to follow Newport Beach plastic surgeon Dr. John Park’s directions post-op. The degree of your lower abdominal swelling greatly depends on how well you follow his directions and your overall health. Follow these simple steps to help reduce swelling after abdominoplasty.

Wear Compression Garments As Advised

We understand that the compression garments you’re sent home with or that you’re instructed to purchase post-surgery may not be the most comfortable or easiest to put on because of their tightness, hence the name “compression.” However, they truly do aid in reducing swelling and ensuring your surgical sites heal properly. The compression of the tissue helps to improve circulation and fluid drainage.

Lay Flat and Walk Frequently

The first few days following your tummy tuck, it’s important to rest. You should try to lie flat with your legs elevated to help with a venous return from your pelvis and legs. This helps to prevent deep venous thrombosis or a blood clot. You’ll want to get up and walk at least every hour to encourage blood flow. Sitting and lying in a V position, such as the one formed in a recliner, causes blood and fluid to pool in the pelvis region only increasing swelling and the possibility of a blood clot.

Limit Sodium Intake

This sounds like a given as most of us already try to limit sodium to avoid bloating regardless of having surgery. Once you’re discharged and are responsible for choosing your meals, keep in mind that high-sodium foods will only make your swelling worse. It’s best to eat a clean diet and stay away from junk food, such as chips and soda. A good healthy diet will help your overall recovery and healing process.
