Sometimes, regardless of our very best efforts with diet and exercise, stubborn pockets of fat can still hold onto particular areas of our body. Liposuction is a proven and effective way to help resolve this problem. Liposuction helps eliminate this stubborn fat, while redefining and sculpting your body to achieve the shaped, toned look you desire.
One thing Dr. Park likes to remind patients who are considering liposuction is that liposuction is not a weight loss tool, but rather a contouring procedure for targeted areas in the body. Areas that can be significantly improved by liposuction include areas in the back, abdomen, thighs, flanks (often referred to as “love handles” or “muffin tops”), buttocks, hips, face, neck, jowls and arms.

In tumescent liposuction, a large volume of dilute solution containing a local anesthetic and epinephrine (a drug that temporarily shrinks the capillaries) is injected into the subcutaneous fat layer (beneath the skin) of the target area, causing the fat to swell and become firmer, thereby enabling the surgeon to have better control when contouring the area.
Because the solution also causes the blood vessels to temporarily shrink, blood loss during the procedure is greatly reduced, and there is less bruising, swelling and pain after the procedure. After the solution is injected, the surgeon makes a small incision in the skin and inserts a cannula (a small, skinny tube connected to a vacuum-like machine) into the fat layer.
Using back and forth movements, the fat is sucked through the tube into a sterile collection system. An elastic compression garment is then worn to help the skin contract and heal.
In Vaser liposuction, ultrasonic energy is applied to the target area in a deliberate controlled fashion to emulsify the fat, which is then aspirated using a suction cannula. This method results in a greater fat extraction, less damage to nerves and blood vessels, and better tightening of skin.
Depending on the target area that will be treated and your desired outcome, Dr. John Park will most likely use a combined approach of tumescent and Vaser liposuction to achieve the best possible subcutaneous fat removal and skin tightening while minimizing pain and bleeding.
Recovery from most liposuction procedures is usually two to three weeks and may require the wearing of a compression garment for two weeks. This garment helps reduce swelling, bruising and irregularities. Most people get back to normal activities within two weeks, but usually Dr. Park recommends keeping activity low for four weeks after the procedure.
