What to Expect After Breast Implant Surgery

If you’ve ever been teased about your small breasts or are simply tired of your boyish physique, you may have considered breast augmentation. However, there’s a lot to know about the recovery period. Many women are surprised by the amount of pain and swelling.

The side effects and recovery period varies from woman to woman. It all depends, so read on if you’re looking for a helpful guide as you recover from breast augmentation surgery.

Post-Op Timeline for Breast Augmentation

So what can you expect now that your breast implants have been placed? Here is a helpful timeline that gives you an idea of what to expect.

  • Days 1–4: Pain is at its highest levels during this time, so keep taking your pain medications on schedule. You will notice significant swelling around the breasts. Weight gain and fluid retention may also occur.
  • Days 4–10: You may notice the swelling moving downward toward your stomach. You should experience less pain during this time, although you may feel more pain at night. If your plastic surgeon recommends exercises, be sure to do them.
  • Days 10–21: You may experience some pain at night, but for the most part, you should be feeling almost back to normal. You may experience skin numbness in some areas. The swelling should be all gone at this point. It’s a good time to start low-impact exercises.
  • Days 21–42: The healing period has reached a plateau. There should be no pain during this time, and you should be feeling well enough to move up to higher-impact exercises.
  • Days 42–9 months: You should no longer experience any swelling. Scar tissues will soften and relax. The breasts become softer.
